I did the “Cooking for Beginners” 3 day course. Before this, I did not know how to cook at all. After completing the course I now have the confidence to follow simple cooking recipes anyone can do at home. I’ve learnt how to cook steak, crispy salmon, lamb tagine, beautiful pumpkin soup, chicken stir fry, tasty vegetables, apple pie, poached eggs and much more. I love Walters cooking classes. When asked what I want for my birthday or Christmas I always say ” A Trupp Cooking Scool Voucher”!. I have been to many classes now and have learnt so much. I love that the classes are hands on and You get to cook the food and eat it too! They are small intermate classes so you can ask questions as you go and get advice. I’ve attended two of Walter’s cooking classes now and have just bought a third as a Christmas present. Small groups where you can really experience individualised learning, you have a world class chef at your disposal to answer any questions you may have along the way. With comprehensive recipe sheets to take home, you are able to easily replicate what you’ve made in class and don’t have to spend the entire lesson taking notes. Both classes I’ve left feeling full, enjoying the most amazing cuisine that has been created on the day. Easily accessible and a short stroll to Prahran Market, this is the perfect gift for the foodie in your life or just someone who wants to improve their kitchen skills. Walter’s approach is easy going and nothing is too much hassle, catering to every skill level. I’ve attended classes on my own as well as with a friend, and both times have been made to feel very welcome and at ease. Relocating to Melbourne for just this year I started attending Trupp Cooking School in South Yarra. Had I planned my time better, and after having experienced Walter’s professional and friendly style of teaching, I now wish I had booked my husband and myself in for the 16 session ‘chef@home’ course. As it was we completed the ‘Curries from Around the World’, Classic Sauces and Stocks’, ‘Spring in Italy’, ‘Vegetable Masterclass’, ‘North African Tangines and Classics’ and have ‘Traditional French Cooking’ and ‘Finger Food, Tapas and Canapés’ lessons to go. Walter shares information on the art of preparing and cooking food together with the science behind it – very hands on and lots of fun. Highly recommend these classes. This cooking school is situated in the heart Chapel Street’s shopping, dining and entertainment precinct in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia and is run by a 3 hat Chef, (Austrian) Walter Trupp. It had students attending from across the glob and he caters for individual and corporate groups. As I entered the place I was welcomed by Walter’s warm greeting and a professional cooking setting that has a delightful marriage of cooking tools with excellent Electrolux luxuries of modernity. Whilst S itting / standing in the school I had a wonderful view of the workshop-like kitchen where I could see this chef working, before I then created delicious recipes with other students that we sampled and completely devoured. All the products/ingredients I used were fresh and the dishes had the warmth of home-made food, coupled with the presentation of a true professional. This chef takes great care in selecting the best quality ingredients and being right next to Chapel Street markets assists this. I had a pleasant very cooking and dining experience with food of the most exquisite flavours. For this reason I highly recommend going to the Trupp Cooking School. All the best. I have attended a four-five hour class, and another three hour class here for hands on french cooking and also pie making. It was a wonderful time. I learned so much and Walter Trupp is a very skilled and informative but laid back teacher. Everything was provided including aprons, but make sure you wear comfortable protective shoes. Thr first class I attended we were a small class of about eight, and we worked in pairs, each pair making two or three absolutely delicious dishes which we eventually plated and transferred to the adjacent dining room, where we all took a deep breath before diving in and becoming gluttons. (Note to self .. next time bring some takeaway containers with me). It was all totally delicious and I have since used a number of the recipes again to great acclaim from my recipient friends. The second class had nine students and we made a heck of a lot of different pastries and pies. Including homemade filo pastry; and we learned how to blind bake; and the flavours ran the gamut from seafood and potatoe in a classic fish pie, to Moroccan fruity and spicy, to chicken, quiche lorraine, and a vegetarian asian pie. Had a very nice day French cooking with Walter in a class of six. It was busy and fruitful and full of lots of greats tips and techniques. And then we got to eat our way through the day and had a lovely and huge lunch in conclusion. The only piece of advice I offer to future students is to bring a few takeaway containers with you to class. At least six.

Thoroughly recommend classes with chef Walter Trupp. he has perfected the experience of learning to cook into a wonderfully enjoyable, educational and delicious enterprise. The classes are well thought out and using only the best fresh ingredients, all dishes are created from the fully equipped state of the art chef’s kitchen, and thoroughly enjoyed in the delightfully social setting of dining around a table together with your classmates over a glass of wine. Each pair cooks a dish at a time, surmounting in an impressive array of flavours and courses to taste at the end of class when all the dishes are brought together. Chef Trupp takes good care of his students and is always looking out to make one’s experience all the more fulfilling through his teaching and accommodating approach. I really appreciate the opportunity to have experienced the Beginners classes as well as a class that is more specialised, Signature Dishes, having learnt many new skills in both and had a great time. If I were to have remained local to the area, I would have gone to many,many more of the classes. Wonderful fun and absolutely delicious – can only recommend!

“It is very inspiring to discover a chef who is generous with his knowledge. The Trupp Cooking School offers an extensive range of classes about cooking and nutrition. Located near Prahran Market, there is a long benchtop/counter around which a small group of students can sit comfortably. Any seat is a good seat – an unobstructed view can be had from any angle. My husband and I enrolled in the class Knife Skills, as we each have our own knives – he has Aritsugu carbon steel knives, handmade with wood and bone handles and I have a hand-me-down cleaver and a sharp and shiny Shun knife (I don’t use his knives and he doesn’t use mine). Walter demonstrates and explains the techniques to julienne, chop, cut, bone, etc. as well as the proper way to sharpen knives. He passed around knives so that we could feel the difference between a knife that is of excellent, good or poor quality. He discussed cutting boards and how to wash them thoroughly to prevent contamination. Walter encourages questions and is very engaging. He stepped out from behind the counter to check each person’s efforts as we practiced on the fruits/vegetables with the supplied knives and board. I highly recommend this class for those keen to learn from a real expert. I purchased the book Trupps’ Wholefood Kitchen – Eat well, live well, feel great to which I’ve already begun to affix post-it notes. This is not just a cookbook, it’s a plain English commentary about how we take care of ourselves when it comes to what we eat.”

Booking the course online was simple. The space is large and incredibly well spaced with high quality cookware and appliances. You really do feel like you’ve walked into the dream kitchen of a top chef.
Walter is a gifted teacher; delivering his class in a straightforward but engaging way, often adding humor to the mix. I was made to feel right at home, regardless of my experience as a cook, and there seemed to be ample opportunity to ask questions about anything food related. Although the Christmas BBQ course was only 3 hour class, I learnt loads of techniques for cooking and preparation that I have already taken with me and applied to my own cooking.
